Happy 20!

Happy 20th wedding anniversary to my husband.

I recently read that if couples can make it to 20 years of marriage, they are happier and spend more time in shared activities-more than newlyweds.  WOW! I am so looking forward to this next year!

As I have shared in previous blogs, he is my first husband, and I am his second wife. I was in my mid-thirties when we got married, and I was clueless.  Thank goodness love is blind.

Marriage is the best, and the worst. Yet the worst is the best because it provides an opportunity to navigate through, learn, repeat the mistakes, and learn to compromise.

What I Know In 20 Years

Here’s what I know after 20 years of marriage:

• Fighting is necessary- I have yet to meet two people of the opposite sex who agree
• Patience takes on a whole new meaning in marriage

• Listen, listen and listen some more
• When you find yourself getting riled up, smile, it disarms your spouse
• The little gestures of kindness truly go a long way
• He’s not going to change, sorry
• Romance is not dead, but marriage is not a Hallmark movie
• Listen to understand, not to be heard
• Fighting like 4th graders sometimes happens

• Sometimes (most times) keep sarcastic remarks to yourself
• The world will not stop rotating on its axis if you go to bed mad
• No, he will never pick up his socks or hang up his clothes
• Imposing deadlines don’t typically work
• Nor do lists, at least in our house
• Appreciate the little things
• Sex is overrated
• He is my best friend, most days
• He continues to make me kneak in the wees (no, this isn’t a typo)

• When I least expect it, he amazes me
• The for better or worse and for richer and poorer will happen
• Nobody makes me laugh like he does
• Nobody makes as mad as he does
• Silence when being together is sometimes the best
• Appreciate every moment
• He is more handsome than the day we re-met
• Nobody else would challenge me like he does
• I chose well

20 years have gone by in a blink. I am a lucky girl.
