“If I could turn back time,” said Cher, I may have paid more attention to my shoes. Cher didn’t say that I did. Who knew about the shoes?
It goes beyond our obsession with shoes. It turns out that the type of shoe we pair (pardon the pun) with our outfits can make a big difference.
A Quick Lesson In Vamp
To truly understand how footwear can serve as an epic wardrobe fail, let’s get acquainted with the vamp of a shoe.
Here’s the definition of vamp: it is where the top of the shoe ends on the top of your foot.
Typically, there are two types of vamps:
- Low Vamp
- High Vamp
Low Vamp
If you want your legs to appear longer (and who doesn’t?) you’ll want to wear low vamp shoes. Low vamp footwear starts at the toes which can add several inches to the length of your leg. This is great for adding inches to the appearance of the length of your beautiful gams.
It is all about looking taller and lengthening our legs.
Lower vamp shoes are best paired with:
- Dresses
- Knee-length skirts or longer
- Wider and cropped pants
- because they promote a fluid line. The key here is not to cut the fluidity of the appearance of the length of your leg.
Low vamp shoes promote a fluid line and can add up to six inches to the overall appearance of your legs! Remember, think taller and longer!
High Vamp
The best way to wear high vamp footwear is with:
- Dresses
- Long skirts
- Pants
We will be talking more about footwear in future posts. I want all of us to understand why the vamp of our shoes is so important. I think you’ll be very surprised at how much different your outfits will look now that you know which type of footwear enhances the overall look of your leg.
This knowledge has helped me tremendously when I am buying shoes. Just because we like a certain style of shoe or boot, doesn’t mean it is the best choice for accomplishing a taller and longer version of us!
Now you have the power to pair the the best footwear for your outfits! Shop well!

Agreed, but never knew it was called “vamp.” I do have one question…I’m seeing booties (high vamp) being worn with skirts these days. I haven’t been able to wear that trend yet myself. What do you think?
Hello! I think if the skirt length is appropriate, booties can work well. It also depends on the heel height. So much detail goes into good style!!!
