Hmmmm….have you ever been asked that question before? Did you know that your haircut does matter for your overall style?

I asked my hairstylist about this, and I thought she was going to start crying with happiness. “Nobody ever considers their figure, face shape when getting their hair cut and finding style. Many of my clients either stick with the same style they have had for years or want a cut that just won’t work for them.”

The ONE Most Important Thing You Need To Know for Your Right Hairstyle

While several factors are involved when truly selecting the perfect hair cut for you, the most important thing you really need to know is your face shape.

Heart-Shaped Face

You have a heart-shaped face when:

  • Your hairline is the widest part of the face (forehead)
  • You have a narrow chin and prominent cheekbones

The goal for you heart-shaped faced ladies is to enhance your two most prominent features, your cheekbones and your eyes. This can be accomplished easily with bangs that are side-swept, curls, and longer flowing layers. You want to create more volume at the bottom of your visage and that can be done with softer layers at the top which creates balance (what we are always aiming for in our dressing as well as hair styles) for this face shape.

Suggested styles for heart-shaped faces:

  • Shoulder-length bob
  • Deep side part with loose waves
  • Bangs, but they need to be a fun side-swept, and not the straight bangs because these will make your face look shorter and wider
  • Longer hair is best with long layers that break at the collarbone

Oval-Shaped Face

You have an oval shaped face when:

  • The length of your face is longer than the width
  • Jawline is just slightly narrower than the hairline

This is the best shape to have for a variety of hairstyles. You oval shapes have no distinct focal points or angles, which means you can experiment more than any other face shape. Lucky you!

Suggested Styles for Oval-Shaped faces:

  • Blunt bob that is above-the-shoulder
  • Shoulder length cuts with subtle layers
  • Side-swept bangs
  • Styles that keep your hair away from your face to enhance your balanced facial features; tucking your hair behind your ears showcase your cheekbones

Square-Shaped Faces

You have an square-shaped face when:

  • Jawline, forehead and cheekbones are the same width
  • Strong and angled jawline

While it may truly be hip to be square, you have some options on how you want to bring attention to the squareness of your face or to soften your strong jawline. It’s good to have choices!

Suggested Styles for Square-Shaped faces:

  • Blunt bob that is above-the-shoulder
  • Shoulder length cuts with subtle layers
  • Side-swept bangs
  • Styles that keep your hair away from your face to enhance your balanced facial features; tucking your hair behind your ears showcase your cheekbones

Round-Shaped Faces

You have a round face if:

  • The length and width of your face are the same
  • You have no distinctive angles or corners

You are known as ‘baby faces’ (you are truly the luckiest group) since you already look younger and can have your pick choosing some fun hairstyles. Your main focus is to make your face appear longer and more oval. An easy way to create this ‘illusion’ is to keep a small piece of hair on one side of your face ‘untucked.’ It makes your face appear less wide.

Suggested Styles for Round-Shaped faces:

  • Short hair can be quite flattering as long as it is parted correctly (no middle parts)
  • Pixie cuts can really work well as long as you have the right amount of texture in the cut and volume toward the top
  • The popular high ponytail for those with longer hair work well

Long-Shaped Faces

You have a long face if:

  • Your length is obviously greater than the width
  • Think a long oval

Your goal is to make your face appear wider to offset the length. Makes complete sense, right?

Suggested Styles for Long-Shaped faces:

  • Curly hair styles can create a wider appearance
  • Face framing layers
  • Chin length bobs with blunt bangs

There you go! You now know what hair style works best for your beautiful face!!
